Married illegal immigrant couple, Joyce (Omoni Oboli) and Paul Unanga (Sam Sarpong) have been ordered by the US immigration to leave the country by voluntary departure. They agree to leave; but only after Joyce who is 5 months pregnant delivers her baby inside the US. This will guarantee automatic citizenship for their child. The couple ignores the deportation order, and go into hiding. Later, Paul is caught and deported by a team of overzealous Immigration officers, led by agent Mark Castello (Michael Scratch). This leaves Joyce to struggle on her own to accomplish their dream.

Then, Joyce meets Susan Backley (Terri Oliver), a married freelance writer who offers to help her with free accommodation until her baby is born. Joyce accepts the offer and moves in. Now, with the help of Susan, Joyce sets out on the most daring journey of her life; to achieve the “American Dream” for her unborn child. She will try by any means necessary.

The theme of the movie is about the Love, dreams, desperation, betrayal and struggles, faced by these non-citizens in order to belong to the American society. “Anchor Baby” is actually a derogatory term for children born by immigrants or other non-citizens in the United States. The movie Anchor Baby is set in the United States, but was shot in Brampton and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Anchor Baby is written, directed and produced by a Nigerian first time director Lonzo Nzekwe. The movie is being produced under his independent film company Alpha Galore films, a division of Alpha Galore Inc. based in Brampton, Ontario Canada. Other co-producers on the project are Ian Sun and Jeremy Hood. For more information about the company, please visit to www.alphagalorefilms.com or www.anchorbabymovie.com.

Anchor Baby shooting production started April 2, and ended April 14, 2010, with only two days break in the two weeks period. There was an additional pick-up day to shoot some extra scenes. So the entire production schedule was thirteen days total. Most of the days were 14-16hrs days. It was a very gruelling experience but the entire cast and crew were amazing and everyone worked really hard to make sure the job was done. The movie was shot on the Red One camera, serial number 7020 nicknamed “Renegade”.

A movie like Anchor Baby is relevant today, especially with issues like the current Arizona stringent laws on immigration. Also when you have a US congressman declare “The greatest threat to America’s national security is “Anchor Babies”. One has to wonder, who is looking out for the children who will become the victims when it’s all said and done. Actually, one of main reasons for making a movie like Anchor Baby is to shed light on the actually victims in this whole immigration debacle. It’s the defenceless children who find themselves entangled in horrible situations due to choices made by their parents or laws passed by politicians to gain votes.

Most people that were born in developed countries around the world by “Legal or Illegal” immigrant parents are considered “Anchor Babies” without even being aware of the term. There are millions of “Anchor Babies” all over the world. So, if you know someone (son, daughter, relative, friend etc) who is considered an “Anchor Baby”, this movie is for them.
